Defending champions United States are out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 after losing 5-4 on penalties against Sweden at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Australia, on Sunday.
The match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes and went to penalties.
Sweden converted five out of their seven penalties but the US could only convert four of seven with Kelley O’Hara missing the last penalty which ended her team's journey in the World Cup.
This is the first time the USA have been eliminated before the semi-final stage in the history of the Women’s World Cup.
Earlier today, Spain beat Switzerland 5-1 with a dominating display and ended their World Cup journey. The Spaniards had a total of 26 shots with 10 on target, not only that, they also completed a total of 676 passes with 70% possession.
In the second Round of 16 match, Japan beat Norway 3-1 and secured their place in the quarter-finals. They had total control over the game. The Japanese qualified for the quarters for the first time since 2015.
Meanwhile, in the third Round of 16 match, the Netherlands defeated South Africa 2-0 with Jill Roord and Lineth Beerensteyn scoring for the Dutch. This was another one-sided eliminator where the Netherlands dominated the game with more possession and made their way into the quarters.
The Dutch have only lost one of their last 11 games at the Women’s World Cup while keeping seven clean sheets during the process.
Spain will face the Netherlands in the first quarter-final on August 11 while Japan will take on Sweden in the second quarter on the same day.
